French Prime Minister urged to snub India in light of Sikh assassination revelations
President of France Emmanuel Macron has been urged to join Joe Biden (US President) and Justin Trudeau (Canadian Prime Minister) in snubbing India’s upcoming Republic Day celebrations, in light of the assassination of Shaheed (Martyr) Bhai Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The killing of the respected Sikh leader and activist in June 2023 began an ongoing series of revelations about India’s anti-Sikh transnational repression program by Canadian and US authorities, resulting in the leaders of both countries rejecting invitations to attend national India celebrations on 26th January held by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Various other international state figures have seemingly rejected invites to the massive event, including the UK’s Rishi Sunak, in what could be an indication of the falling reputation of India after the revelations of 2023. However, Macron is believed to be set to attend, leading to a global outcry from many who are vocal on India’s mass human rights abuses, including Sikh groups.
Community advocacy group The Sikh Federation UK released a statement on Macron’s relations with India, saying “Emmanuel Macron must show solidarity with the US Administration and Canadian government and send a strong signal to Narendra Modi that transnational repression by India is totally unacceptable”.
Along with the uncoverings in Canada and the USA, this week UK media revealed British Sikhs were given “threat to life warnings” in connection with India’s anti-Sikh transnational repression, which is focused on disrupting and destroying the Khalistan (free Sikh homeland) movement.
