Undefeated Sikh boxer continues journey towards titles

“The Sikh Community has always had ability. Now we can prove it.”

Sukhdeep Singh is an Ontario based Punjab born professional boxer. Tomorrow (Nov 16th) in Brampton he fights an Argentinian whose last opponent was a world title challenger. Read on to learn more.

An undefeated Sikh boxer has spoken of his intentions to be an example of sporting talent within the community, as he looks to pursue titles.

Sukhdeep Singh Bhatti, based in Ajax, Ontario (Canada), is currently 6-0 (2 KOs) as a professional boxer. Sukhdeep started boxing in Ludhiana, Punjab, where he was born, when he was joined up with a local amateur boxing programme.

Amateur boxing academies in Punjab have produced real talent in recent years in both men’s and women’s categories, including World Championship Junior 2017 Gold medallist Mandeep Kaur. Like Mandeep Kaur, Sukhdeep hails from the village of Chakar, which is why he is often called Sukhdeep Singh Chakria (a reference to his home village). The same village has also produced another international competition Gold medal winner in Simranjit Kaur.

Like his village sisters, Sukhdeep Singh amassed a stellar amateur record, including two national Gold medals, as he competed in India. Since moving to Canada and turning professional, Sukhdeep Singh has only fought more experienced competitors and won conclusively every time. In his last fight he went eight-rounds, something most competitors don’t do so early on in their career, showing great skill to win a unanimous decision points win against an Argentinian opponent.

Speaking to the Sikh Press Association about his boxing career, Sukhdeep Singh said “I am honoured to be one of the new generation of Punjabi Sikh athletes.

“Our community is known to produce talent in many sports – such as hockey, cricket and wrestling – but not in boxing. To have the chance to be among the first to make a real mark as a Sikh boxer is a great challenge but my faith in Sikhi will help me achieve as long as I continue working hard.

“The Sikh community has always had talent, especially in combat. Now we can prove it because we have the programmes that put those with talent into competition.”

Sukhdeep Singh’s progress saw him recently get signed up to one of Canada’s premiere promotional companies, United Boxing Promotions. The middleweight has showed outstanding footwork, reflexes and hand-speed thus far in his career, as well as great stamina which compliments his dexterous style.

Sukhdeep Singh’s next fight is tomorrow (November 16) against the much more experienced Hector Santana, whose last fight was against a former world title challenger. The rapid progress of Sukhdeep Singh shows he is definitely a sports star to keep an eye on.
