Khalsa Aid nominated for Nobel Peace Prize in same week India questions them on “supporting terrorism”
World renowned international Sikh humanitarian aid charity Khalsa Aid have been nominated for a Nobel Peace Price, in the same week they have been summoned for questioning by India’s NIA (National Investigation Agency).
Canadian Conservative MP Tim Singh Uppal revealed he had nominated the group for the prestigious prize, with support from fellow MP Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria on 17 January. In a letter of nomination, Uppal listed some of the charitable work done by Khalsa Aid since 1999 and said the charity “respresents exactly the kind of international cooperation and commitment that the world is in dire need of today.” Uppal also highlighted that Khalsa Aid work on the Sikh principle of “Sarbat Da Bhalla” (a term said in daily Sikh prayers meaning well-being for all).
Details of the nomination came just one day after Khalsa Aid released a statement revealing that they had been summoned for questioning by India’s NIA, based on their work providing aid for the attendees of the #FarmersProtest in Delhi.
Khalsa Aid said they are “deeply concerned” about the summons and the “health and mental wellbeing” of their team being subjected to “interrogations which may not comply with international standards”.
Khalsa Aid have been targeted by the NIA along with many other prominent figures connected with the #FarmersProtest, including journalists. This is seen by many as a continued attempt to harass and intimidate those questioning the actions of the government, a tactic the Indian state has long used against its dissenters.
A discussion on this harassment by the Indian state is being held by a conglomerate of Sikh orgs tomorrow (Tuesday 19 January).

Despite the summons by the NIA, Khalsa Aid remain hugely popular and widely supported by Sikhs and more communities for their amazing work supporting humanity, leading to their deserved Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
